Waiting…

Hey kiddies. Shock and surprise, I’m still waiting for my computer to be fixed. I got a call last night and hopefully there will be someone coming to fix it tonight. So, if all goes according to plan I’ll be back up and running in a few hours. Which means I’ll finally be able to finish going through those pictures from the Galapagos and put them up. Sorry for the wait.

On a fun technical note, I’ve set up my main page so it has an Atom feed (would’ve preferred RSS, but blogger.com uses Atom). That means if you have a newsreader or a good browser (ie. anything but Internet Explorer) you can create a Live Bookmark or the equivalent. Now you don’t have to check this page to see if I’ve updated, all you have to do is check your bookmarks – I’m going to fiddle with it to make sure the date shows up in the summary so you’ll know the last time I updated.

A voyage on the Beagle

Hey there folks. Sorry it’s been a while since I gave you an update, there’s been a lot going on. Mishelle has come down to Colombia to visit for a month, we’ve been to the Galapagos (somewhere close to 600 pictures to filter through, that’s taking a LONG time), plus one other issue…

I’ve come to the conclusion that I have an abusive husband. My abusive husband is technology. No matter how much technology hurts me, I still love it and keep coming back for more. I buy a used car – and it immediately craps out on me. I buy a new one – and a broken wire costs me more than $600 to repair. Three tires blow out within a year. I buy an mp3 player to take down to Colombia with me, put ALL my music on it (about 20Mb) and it immediately dies when I get down here. I buy a SECOND mp3 player, and when it gets here there’s no battery and the firmware craps out on me because when I was transferring files my computer died. I buy the aforementioned laptop, and 1. The video card goes so I have no TV output 2. The AC adapter is falling apart, the wires are about to go I think 3. I go through a month of utter hell as one of my RAM modules has gone haywire, causing programs to randomly shut down, the COMPUTER to randomly shut down, programs won’t start, files get corrupted, etc etc etc, and 4. Finally, last night, my computer completely died. It no longer even turns on.

So, what to do? Do I leave this abusive relationship, even though I love technology so much? Or do I continue to allow it to abuse me? Maybe I should join a monastery, they don’t have technology there, do they?

Anyway, I’ll try to give you all an update as soon as I can – which may be months, depending on what happens with my computer. Wish me luck.

I like presents

Sometime a while a back I came across what I think is a fantastic idea. Someone had put their own personal up on their website – a list of stuff they wanted and hoped people would, out of the kindness of their heart, get for them. What a great idea, huh? So today I was sitting around watching TV and I suddenly remembered that wonderful idea, and decided to do the same for myself. So, I’ve created a wishlist for myself. There’s also a link to it on the page about me. So, if you’re feeling generous, or if you miss me so much you want to buy me something, check it out!

PS Two weeks to Galapagos, woohoo!

I love you internets

So, here’s why I’m loving the internet. Jonas and Laura are living in Japan, they’ve been teaching there since April or May of last year (can’t remember exactly what month they went). They’ve recently gotten a new computer and finally have internet in their apartment – so they got a webcam and microphone and set up an MSN account. Yesterday I got to have a video conversation with them, it was very cool. There was a tiny bit of a delay (maybe a half second), but the picture and sound were crystal clear. Screw the phone, everyone needs this!

PS I’ve found a Flash-based image viewer to put on my website that’s very simple and very nice, I’m going to add it when I get a chance to – maybe this weekend. Very cool setup, very nice to use. I’ll let everyone know when it’s working!

Jeff & Tanya get hitched!

Well, I am now officially broke for pretty well the rest of the time I’m living down here. I just paid for a trip to the Galapagos over Semana de Sante (I think that’s spelled properly…) and it ain’t cheap. However, it will DEFINITELY be worth it! Just a little over a month, I can’t wait!

As for the wedding last weekend – fantastic. I had a great time back in Brampton and Guelph, it was nice to see everyone. Unfortunately, I didn’t get to spend enough time in Guelph to see everyone I wanted to see, I guess that’ll have to wait until the next time I’m there. Maybe for a frisbee tournament this summer, who knows.

Jeff and Tanya’s wedding was a great time. Unfortunately, all the pictures from the ceremony turned out blurry – Jamie thinks it’s because it wasn’t bright enough, but I’m going to blame my parents and Anthony :) I have some decent pictures from the morning of and the reception after though, so I’ll pick and choose and send’em up sometime soon.
